Photography – Remembrance Project

50 Years Munich Olympic Attack

January: DAVID BERGER

The terrorist attack during the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich marks its 50th anniversary in 2022: In memory of the twelve victims, institutions from Munich and Fürstenfeldbruck dedicate each month to one victim, their life, and their fate.
In January, the Amerikahaus commemorates David Berger, a weightlifter from the Israeli Olympic team. Born in the USA, Berger grew up in Cleveland, Ohio. In 1970, he immigrated to Israel. There, he managed to qualify for the Israeli team at the Olympic Games in Munich. On September 5/6, 1972, David Berger died as the last of the twelve victims in a burning helicopter in Fürstenfeldbruck.
The multimedia remembrance project for David Berger consists of two parts, which are related but can also stand alone. The facade of the Amerikahaus displays impressions from David Berger’s life for two weeks. Simultaneously, an audio track can be accessed via a QR code. An inner monologue along traces of memory as an attempted approach to the person David Berger. What remains? This audio recording provides insight into his life, gives his family a voice, and encourages reflection on the democratic values of peace and education that David Berger stood for.

50 Years Munich Olympic Massacre
For the 50th anniversary of the Olympic Games in Munich, the Olympic massacre of September 5-6, 1972, will be commemorated throughout 2022. Each month, one victim will be the focus of remembrance. Various interventions in public spaces are planned, ranging from installations that will be on display throughout the month to one-day actions.
The remembrance project is conceived and coordinated by the Jewish Museum Munich in cooperation with the NS-Dokumentationszentrum München and the Consulate General of the State of Israel. Implementation is carried out with cooperation partners such as the Amerikahaus, the district of Fürstenfeldbruck, the Deutsches Theater, the University of Applied Sciences for Public Service in Bavaria – Police Department, and the Munich Police Headquarters, as well as other cultural and educational institutions and interested parties.
The Jewish Museum Munich accompanies the remembrance project on its blog and social media channels under the hashtag
