Photography – Remembrance Project

50 Years Munich Olympic Attack

March: ZE‘EV FRIEDMAN

The terrorist attack during the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich marks its 50th anniversary in 2022: In remembrance of the twelve victims, institutions from Munich and Fürstenfeldbruck dedicate each month to one victim, their life, and their fate.

From March 3 to March 31, 2022, the Jexhof Farmhouse Museum commemorates bantamweight Ze’ev Friedman. Friedman was the son of Polish Shoah survivors who emigrated to Israel in 1960. He had already won several awards in gymnastics before switching to weightlifting. As a long-standing Israeli champion in the bantamweight class, he was considered a great medal hope for Israel at the 1972 Olympic Games. His life story is told on large banners, illustrated with numerous images, in the outdoor area of the museum. This allows interested individuals to learn about him regardless of museum opening hours. The life-size silhouette of Ze’ev Friedman visually connects to the current special exhibition „Making the Invisible Visible. Jewish Biographies from the Brucker Region“, which will be on display at the Jexhof Farmhouse Museum until May 29, 2022.

Twelve Months — Twelve Names | 50 Years Munich Olympic Attack
January — December 2022
50 years after the Olympic Games in Munich, the Olympic attack of September 5-6, 1972, will be commemorated throughout 2022. Each month, one victim will be at the center of the remembrance. Various interventions in public spaces are planned, ranging from installations that will be on display throughout the month to one-day actions.
The remembrance project is conceived and coordinated by the Jewish Museum Munich in cooperation with the NS Documentation Center Munich and the Consulate General of the State of Israel. Implementation will be carried out with cooperation partners such as Amerikahaus, the district of Fürstenfeldbruck, the Deutsches Theater, the University of Applied Sciences for Public Service in Bavaria — Police Department, and the Munich Police Headquarters, as well as other cultural and educational institutions and other interested parties.
